Is Your Website Losing Buyers You Already Paid For? A 15-Minute Check
Most visitors leave without enquiring. If your Meta pixel is missing or broken, you cannot reach any of them again. Here is how to check it yourself.
Most people who visit your website leave without enquiring. That is normal. They are comparing, they got interrupted, or they are not ready yet.
The question is whether you can reach them again. If your website has a working Meta pixel, you can show those exact visitors your ads on Instagram and Facebook over the next days and weeks. If it does not, every one of those visits is gone for good, including the ones you paid for with ads.
Here is how to check it in 15 minutes, without a developer.
Step 1: Check if the pixel is there (2 minutes)
Install the free Meta Pixel Helper extension in Google Chrome. Open your website and click the extension icon.
- Green, with a pixel ID: good, a pixel is installed.
- Nothing found: you have no pixel. Every visitor is lost after they leave.
- Yellow or red warnings: a pixel exists but something is wrong. Note the message.
Do this on your homepage and on your booking or contact page, because some sites only load it on certain pages.
Step 2: Check it is the right pixel (3 minutes)
Open Meta Events Manager (business.facebook.com/events_manager) and look at the pixel ID listed for your business. Compare it with the ID the Pixel Helper showed you.
It is surprisingly common to find a pixel left behind by a previous agency, connected to an ad account you no longer control. If the IDs do not match, your visitors are being collected in someone else's account.
Step 3: Check it records what matters (5 minutes)
A pixel that only records page views is a start, but the valuable signals are actions: someone opening your booking page, starting WhatsApp or sending your form.
In Events Manager, open your pixel and look at the events received in the last 7 days. You want to see at least:
- PageView: someone visited a page.
- Lead or Contact: someone sent the form or tapped WhatsApp.
- Schedule: someone booked, if you take bookings online.
If you only see PageView, Meta does not know which visitors became enquiries, so it cannot find more people like them.
Step 4: Build one audience you can use today (5 minutes)
In Ads Manager, go to Audiences, then Create audience, then Custom audience, then Website. Choose "all website visitors in the past 30 days".
That is your warmest audience: people who already know your name. Even a small budget shown to them, with an ad that answers their main doubt and invites them to message you, usually performs far better than ads shown to strangers.
What a good setup looks like
- One pixel, in an ad account you own, on every page.
- Events for every way a buyer can contact you: form, WhatsApp, phone, booking.
- The Conversions API connected as well, so you do not lose data when browsers block tracking.
- An audience of recent visitors, and ads that speak to people who have already seen you.
The two-minute version
If you only do one thing today, install Meta Pixel Helper and open your own website. Whatever it shows you, you will know where you stand, and whether the money you spend bringing people to your site is working once or working twice.
